Gum disease is on the rise, but did you know it's very possible for people of all ages, even children and teens to suffer with this ailment?

Gum disease is also known as Periodontal Disease. It's an infection of the gums, and is caused by a build-up of plaque that eventually hardens into tartar.

Why is it on the rise in teens? There are a variety of reasons this condition is seemingly becoming more common in younger demographics: Poor hygiene, excess sugar and snacking, energy drinks, not caring for braces properly, hormonal changes which increase blood flow to the gums, smoking and the ever increasing popularity of vaping are all culprits.

What are the symptoms? Common symptoms include redness, swelling and tenderness of the gums. Additionally gum recession and excessive bleeding with flossing are also signs of the disease. And the most embarrassing symptom: bad breath that won't go away.

How to prevent it? Good hygiene! Brushing at least twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste is a great way to not only improve hygiene, but to help keep excess plaque at bay. Flossing daily if you can is an added benefit. See your dentist twice a year - this way he or she can identify any potential problems before they become serious issues. There are preventative nutritional tips as well! Avoid sugary drinks and starchy foods - unless you can brush your teeth following consumption. Avoiding smoking and vaping is a must as well!

How to treat it? If you start noticing signs that might be concerning, a visit to your dentist is recommended to avoid gum recession and tooth loss. Dependent on the severity, they may recommend antibiotics. In rare cases, for advanced disease, gum surgery may be necessary.
